Geneva by the roads

Driving in a rental car to Geneva can be a pretty exciting experience. There are some important things to know before starting your trip... Roads indicated with a green "A" are international highways, the ones in blue are the main international routes, and the ones in white are the smallest.

Swiss roads are in pretty good shape in general, although towards the mountain they can be a bit narrow and curvy. In winter is common to use chains or snow wheels, are roads may be closed due to strong snowing.

You should drive on the right side. Limits are of 120 km/h (75 mph) in highways, 80 km/h (50 mph) in main motorways and 50 km/h (30 mph) in residential zones. It's mandatory to use your seatbelt in both the front seat and the back seats. There's an annual road tax to pay; drivers should by a vignette (sticker) in the board on in tourist offices in Switzerland before starting your trip. This sticker is good for a year.
