The American eating holiday of Thanksgiving is less than a week away, so I thought I would share my top tips for happy holiday eating by car rental. For those of you unfamiliar, Thanksgiving is a time when the entire country get together with their families to eat entirely too much food and watch entirely too much football (the brutal American kind). Traditional foods for this holiday include turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, but more and more the "fashionable" Thanksgiving spread includes a mix of modern twists on tradition and some completely unconventional dishes.
Avoid Outlandish Cooking Combinations
My number one tip for eating happily on your Thanksgiving holiday by car rental is to avoid any new-fangled (and even some old) combinations including but not limited to:
1) The Turducken. It sounds like a joke but you can check for yourself, there are hundreds of serious recipes for this on the internet. Basically, a chicken is crammed into a duck, which is then crammed into a Turkey, and all cooked together. Could there be any science behind this idea that says three birds cook up better than one? Or has a novel idea become mainstream and gotten carried away? I can't say I've ever tried it but I don't recommend you do either.
2) Casseroles. Namely, the modern version of a green bean one that is little more canned soup, canned green beans, and canned dehydrated onions. Please. I can't find anything to be thankful for in this mush of baked preserves without a single fresh ingredient.
Take a Tropical Twist
Tropical fruits and flavors are making a splash on to Thanksgiving tables this year and I give the idea two big thumbs up! Pineapple slices served with meats go a long way to help digestion, passionfruit drinks in a wine glass are so vogue, and a tropical fruit sauce instead of plain old cranberry will certainly wow the palate.
Don't Fear the Fakes
Though it's most likely your Thanksgiving invitations by car rental will be to a carnivorous meal, if you happen to come across some tofurkey, seitan, tempeh, or any other meat substitutes give them a shot! The vast majority aren't too bad, and some are quite good! Peaceful, cruelty-free, or otherwise termed Vegetarian Thanksgiving dinners are delicious affairs. How much do you trust the meat of an animal which was one of literally millions grown as fast as possible to feed holiday demand?
