Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux has been producing wine since the Roman times and many would agree they've perfected the art.  The term Bordeaux wine covers any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France, and numbers over 700 million bottles per year.

If you've tried a Bordeaux wine before it was probably red, or claret in the UK.  Thats because the great majority of wine produced in the region is Red Bordeaux, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Carménére.  Here nearly all wines are blended with only a few producers making single-variety wines.

Bordeaux car hire

You can begin your wine tour in the city, where you can sample many of the fine wines of the area at restaurants along with some of the tastiest food in France.  However, to really get the full wine tasting experience you must travel a bit, which is easy enough with a rental car from Bordeaux.

Most of the best vineyards to visit in the region are less than an hours drive from the city by Bordeaux car hire.  Visit wine cellars and take tasting strolls along the Gironde estuary in the Pauillac and Pointe de Graves.  Explore the green countryside of the Libournias region, full of grape vines and Roman monuments.  South of Bordeaux you can pass the pine forest on your way to taste the wines of Chateau de Labrede or the nature reserve at Saucats, or relax with some vinotherapy at Martillac.
