Emergency Safety In Flight

How many passengers ever take the time to read the emergency procedures fold-out in the seat backs when they fly?  I know I've never given it the time and attention it deserves.  Is this because I think its impossible for the plane to crash?  Far from it, I'm well aware that anything can happen.  I suppose it's easier to imagine and take precautions for your travel by car rental (such as looking for high safety ratings and airbags in your next 7 seater car rental), but aside from the 2 minute demo by the flight attendant, is there a way to be prepared for emergency situations in a plane?

While the average Joe will still have to settle for research on the internet and videos like this one on in flight safety from YouTube, members of British Airways elite executive club now have a unique opportunity to take a air travel emergency course.  The four hour course is available in exchange for air miles or for a £125 fee, and helps travelers prepare for the aftermath of a plane crash.

Much like Richard Simmons shows in this video for a New Zealand airline, British Airways can teach you the proper way to use the oxygen masks, escape slides and safety vests.

Safety preparedness is important for travel by car hire as well.
