Malpais is located at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, around 4 km north of the Cabo Blanco National Park. Known as a surfer's paradise, it has consistent waves, good swells, and a long beach break. The lush vegetation growing alongside the coast makes it easy to get out of the sun and into the shade and enjoy a relaxing afternoon listening to the waves.
Named "one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world" by Forbes magazine, Malpais was once just a simple fishing and cattle-farming village. In recent years it has become popular among surfers and adventure travelers from around the world. The town is known for its incredible beauty, white sand coves, rocky outcroppings, hilly landscape, and forests teaming with animals, birds, and insects. Take a Costa Rica car hire out to this beautiful beach town in the Puntarenas Province.
Malpais is mostly rural still and very spread out. Arranging your own transportation in advance is recommended. It’s important to note that the roads are often pot-holed and can become very muddy in the rainy season (July - October), and dry and dusty in the dry season (November - May). A Costa Rica car hire is a good way to get around the area.
The beaches of Malpais offer plenty of water sports and other activities such as fishing tours, scuba diving, kite surfing, and snorkeling. Land-based activities include horseback riding, canopy tours, mountain biking, or hiking on some excellent trails. For birdwatchers, Malpais is among Costa Rica's richest areas, with many costal and migratory birds. All this combined with great weather all year long makes Malpais one of Costa Rica's most popular destinations.
