Housing more than seven million objects, the British Museum of human history and culture in London is among the largest and most comprehensive museums in the world. Its collections originate from all continents and document the story of human culture from its beginning to the present. Reserve a London car hire for your visit to the British Museum.
In its over 250 year history the museum has become an important part of London. Until 1997 the British Museum held the unique distinction that it housed both a national museum of antiques and a national library in the same building. What was known as the Round Reading Room was moved and in 1997 became the British Library.
Both the British Library and British Museum are non-departmental public bodies sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and charge no admission fee. Enjoy an expensive day in London with a cheap car rental booked online and free admission to one of the world’s top museums.
The various departments of the museum house separate collections, each of a size and importance to deserve a full day's visit, if not their own building! Their department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan houses the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of Egyptian antiques outside the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Egyptian antiques have been part of the museum's collection since its foundation in 1753, when the museum received 160 Egyptian objects from Sir Hans Sloane.
The British Museum's department of Greek and Roman Antiques is equally impressive, with over 100,000 objects ranging from the Greek Bronze Age to the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine.
